Why Do We Need to Build a Global Elites Network - Alumni Community - for Life-Time Career Improvements? by Mav

Right now, every alum did belong to an alumni association located in his/her working city. However this circle is too small to do anything helpful or significant, especially for our life-time career improvements.

My college was Tsinghua, which is the big elite university in China now of 36K enrolled students. We have more than 17K alumni in total and ~2/3 are still alive working in more than 100 countries around the world. Unfortunately, because we have too few Tsinghua alumni in every specific city, it's very hard for event organizers to launch large social meetup events, let alone to meet a lot of those who can help to improve in your future career and to hold small circle get-togethers, because most likely at one specific moment only around 5~10% alumni are available or interested in such an small event.

For example, in NYC, there's a Tsinghua association with 300+ registered members, most of whom are students stuying in such graduate schools as NYU or Columbia. Every year or so they meet once and most likely just for a dinner talk. If ~3% are in very high positions or in dream industry such as working in the financial sector of Wall Street per our sample stats, there're only around 10 alumni with whom every other alumni want to meet. But for them, what's the benefit for such a social event?

They have little or almost no any benefit to attend this kind of eating event but waste a lot of time, so over years they would like not to attend such a boring social meetup with only students. But if we can pool together more than 100 elite schools like Harvard in the United States, Oxford in UK, Tokyo in Japan, IIT in Indian and so on and so forth, then 10 in top positions of each school x 100 universities would lead to 1000 alumni in total: if even 10~30% interested in or available for one specific large-scale social meetup, then 100~300 alumni in a dream industry like Goldman Sachs would show up, so everyone attended would think it's worth their time and energy.

Also, we can negotiate on an aggregate level with F-500 companies on behalf of all alumni and let businesses sponsor our events and even hire our elites directly with a higher priority if we have a very large pool in each city. And we can even get group travel discounts from travel agencies for us to travel together like meeting in a cruise. In a word, by pooling elites together, the total social capital for every alum has increased a lot, especailly for students who wish to pursue a dream job in wished industry: by attending such a social meetup, he/she can talk to any people in almost any industry and then position him/herself much better in the job market. Meanwhile, some alum may be eligible to recruit new students directly if they're in management positions with job openings.

After the above analysis, do you still want to stay in your old fragmented small circle or transfer to a new big global elites network? Try to think, Tsinghua has more than 1000 fragmented alumni associations around the world, so it's hard for them to help each other, especially in career improvements. Our job at #fb/GlobalElites.net is to put together more than 1000 fragmented Tsinghua alumni associations located in every corner of the world and then put it in a even larger elite alumni community where there're more than 1000 elite universities from each country like Tsinghua, each of which may have more than 1000 fragmented alumni associations like Tsinghua as well spreading around the world.

All in all, if we can piece together these 1000 universities x 1000 alumni associations/university, then a 5~10 million top global elite community can make us all do big things: for instance, every month or so we can hold a big social meetup in every big city of each country, letting alumni seek dates, look for job advises and even seek direct hiring opportunities among our almuni community.

Requirements for Joining the Global Elites Alumni Network - Top 1/1000 from Top 5 Schools in Each Country of the World

After careful consideration, we've decided to recruit all grads from top 5 colleges in any country or in top 5 spots of any concentration as life-time golden membership pass to #fb/GlobalElites.net community, representing top 3 out of 1000 general public in terms of academic achievements across the board.

To welcome so many alumni from world's top elite universities like Harvard jumping onto #fb/GlobalElites.net boat, we've changed name to GlobalElitesNet Alum. Our target audience would be 99 percentile. For example, US population / life expectancy = 310 million / 77.9 = ~4 million at one age. 99 percentile will lead to 40K top elites a year. But we only pick ~1/3 at 16.7K seniors to issue life-time membership.

Partly because every top b-school has a powerful career center, connecting the most powerful alumni from dream businesses almost in any industry. And some even help recruit talented applicants. unfortunately, post-grads have no such an advantage.

Since the United States is the studying-abroad heaven of the world, only top 5 universitywide represent too tough for most schools, and even top 10 (meeting ~16.7K in total aka top 3 out of 1000 requirement)) still not reflecting the concept that top US elite universities are not only for US residents but also for the whole world. We will release more later. However, to keep our community with a top quality standard of top 3 out of 1000 general public in terms of academic achievements, we still need to tighten our qualification rules overall. 

If a university cannot be added in our Global Elites Network pool universitywide, they still have a chance of joining us via top 5 rankings in its own specialty. For example, because Purdue University is a public one and Indiana state laws require that no child be left behind, its overall undergraduate student body is not good enough, but its graduate schools are very good, with some even top-notch, attracting close to 10K graduate students from more than 100 countries of the world, 4 of which such as Industrial Engineering have been ranked #1 spot in the United States and even globally. Therefore, Purdue graduate students in Industry Engineering et al would be eligible to be issued a life-time golden pass for them to join our #fb/GlobalElites.net community.

4. Shanghai Jiaotong University (SJTU) and
5. Fudan University

Tsinghua has been our top choice since it has the best student body quality: Most national and international university rankings place Tsinghua as the best university in mainland China. And admission to Tsinghua is extremely competitive. Every year, many applicants scoring the highest in the National College Entrance Exams choose Tsinghua. In 2008, 215 out of 300 students, or more than 70%, who scored the top 10 in the 30 tested provinces and regions chose Tsinghua and 21 out of the 30 top scorers in each province and region chose the university. We've built a page at #fb/TsinghuaAlumni for all Tsinghua alumni to communicate with each other, which is open to the general public.

We've decided to invite all Peking University alumni to join us, but we created a separate page at #fb/PekingAlumni for them, first because long time ago two schools merged into one in Kunming, and then PKU borrowed several departments from Tsinghua, and all the time we have doublefaces both graduated from Tsinghua and PKU, and most importantly in our Alumni's extended families, we have tons of PKU alums as members.

Also, please invite alumni's extended family to join us too as any business school does now. One of major reasons why facebook is so popular today is because tons of housewives have strong needs to be social. But geo and time limitations make them pursue online virtual social networking platforms like facebook. Marketing rules: all needs will be met sooner or later and facebook filled this void and grow very fast. During the past year, facebook user base has more than tripled, passing half a billion milestone.

Some alumni suggest we absorb more universities like Fudan, Shanghai Jiaotong to #fb/GlobalElites.net, so we did it as requested. However, some have concern here on Zhejiang University since it acquired several second-tier and even third-tier colleges into its current portfolio, and therefore lowering down its overall alumni quality. If in any field Zhejiang has been ranked in top 5 spots, we will welcome grads from that school.

Social networking like facebook has become more and more important communication tool between friends and colleagues, personal and professional. The next stage would be that professional businesses hiring teams (HRs) will use it as a major hiring and networking platform to look for top talented job seekers/changers who can best fit into their position openings.
